SANTO DOMINGO. -Within the framework of the process of updating the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, the Dominican Republic is moving towards a more ambitious, inclusive climate planning that is aligned with the needs of its population.
Through a series of workshops involving more than 330 people, the country has gathered the necessary inputs to strategically incorporate cross-cutting themes such as the inclusion of early childhood, childhood, adolescence and youth, action for climate empowerment, gender equality, the role of the private sector and rural communities.
This effort is led by the Dominican government through the National Steering Committee of the NDC, composed of the National Council for Climate Change and Carbon Market (CNCCMC), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MMARN), and the Ministry of Finance and Economy.
A press release highlights that this update process has the technical and financial support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the United Nations System, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
These workshops are part of a series of initiatives aimed at analyzing in depth the adaptation, mitigation, and transparency components included in the NDC. Furthermore, they serve as strategic platforms for proposing measures that strengthen climate action and identify gaps from a perspective based on human rights, climate justice, and sustainable development.
The meetings were attended by representatives of local communities, rural grassroots organizations, government institutions, the private sector, youth and adolescent networks, civil society organizations, academia, people with disabilities, as well as consultants and climate change specialists.
Integrating cross-cutting issues, in addition to broadening the legitimacy of the process, also ensures that climate goals respond to the realities of those most affected by climate change. With a focus on multi-sectoral co-responsibility, innovative contributions have been made to strengthen the impact and implementation of climate measures.
With these advances, the Dominican Republic reaffirms its commitment to the Paris Agreement and to building a low-carbon, resilient and fair economy where no one is left behind.
“The NDC 3.0 will be more than just a technical document; it will be a shared roadmap reflecting the voices of its territories and diverse sectors. This document represents the main national climate planning tool, guiding investments, mobilizing financing, and facilitating intersectoral collaboration to transform key sectors. The NDC aligns with the National Development Strategy 2030, which integrates a rights-based approach and the Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy,” states the press release.
