Coraasan reports it will repair damage to homes affected after the collapse of the Cibao Central aqueduct pipe

The breakdown that occurred this Thursday, December 25, in Sabana Iglesia left four houses affected and caused the interruption of the drinking water service to more than 800,000 people in Santiago and Moca.

SANTO DOMINGO - The Santiago Water and Sewerage Corporation (Coraasan) reported that it will assume the repair of the damage caused to several homes after the explosion of a main pipe of the Cibao Central aqueduct, which occurred this Thursday, December 25, in the community of La Zanja, municipality of Sabana Iglesia, province of Santiago.

According to the institution, the breakdown occurred at 11:20 a.m. in a 60-inch post-tensioned concrete , belonging to the raw water intake line that supplies the municipalities of Santiago and Moca.

Authorities confirmed that there were no human casualties ; however, the area was declared in a state of emergency, while technical brigades and heavy equipment from Coraasan work on the intervention of the affected area.

Four homes affected

A technical assessment conducted by a commission from the institution determined that four homes were affected by the incident. At the direction of Coraasan's Director General, Engineer Andrés Cueto, the entity committed to compensating for the damages, including repairing the physical infrastructure of the affected homes, as well as replacing furnishings and other household goods.

“The institution will support the affected families and offer all necessary guarantees in this situation,” Coraasan said in an official statement.

Water service interruption

The pipeline explosion caused the interruption of drinking water service to approximately 60% of the population of the province of Santiago and the municipality of Moca, representing about 800,000 people.

Coraasan explained that the affected pipeline has been in operation for over 30 years and has a flow capacity of five cubic meters per second, equivalent to approximately 115 million gallons per day. While repairs are underway, drinking water is being supplied by tanker trucks to the affected areas.

The institution also clarified that prior to this breakdown, a purchasing process had been initiated to subcontract a company to carry out maintenance work on that section of the aqueduct.

Coraasan reiterated its commitment to restoring service as quickly as possible and to maintaining constant communication with the affected communities in Sabana Iglesia.
