SANTO DOMINGO.- Regarding the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub that has left 98 dead so far, Congressman Pedro Martínez yesterday called on state agencies to strengthen inspection plans for both public and private works.
He argued that, although it is not possible to know the exact state of the collapsed structure until experts analyze it and determine the causes, "undoubtedly a structure that has collapsed in that way is a consequence of a state of material deterioration.".
“That is a lack of oversight of public and private establishments in the Dominican Republic. Everything has its time, in addition to the conditions of its use,” he emphasized.
He said there must be supervision and maintenance, and a record card for the structures. “The engineers know that there is wear and tear on the materials of the constructed works.”.
Martínez pointed out that it is necessary in the country to supervise and take measures with the physical structures with frequent inspections, in order to prevent events like those that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub.
“A structure that collapses in that way is a consequence of a state of deterioration and material wear that eventually ends up showing up somewhere,” declared the legislator from the Alianza País Party.
He called on the authorities to conduct frequent inspections of the structures.
