The ABA highlights that female financial users have better
payment behavior than men, which favorably impacts their
credit risk levels.
SANTO DOMINGO – Women are showing a greater propensity to save,
have increased their access to formal credit, and seek products
that guarantee security and profitability, although some barriers still need
to be overcome to achieve greater access to financing, stated the Association of
Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA).
The ABA highlighted the preference of female financial users for products such
as savings accounts and microloans, where, for example, there is
a ratio of 135 female borrowers for every 100 male borrowers in the microloan portfolio
. The analysis conducted by the entity is based on the
2021 Gender Report in the Banking Sector, recently published by the
Superintendency of Banks.
In a press release, the ABA (Argentine Banking Association) stated that between 2013 and 2020, the number
of women with at least one formal loan increased at an
annual rate of 4.7%, surpassing the rate for men, which was only 2.8% annually.
association highlighted greater financial inclusion during this period, noting that
women's participation in the loan portfolios of
multiple banks increased by 3.3%, reaching 37.2% of the total as of December
2020.
The association also pointed out that women have a greater share of the
loan portfolio for low-cost housing, at 54.4%, and
have almost equal participation in first-time home loans,
at 48%.
The Argentine Banking Association (ABA) highlighted that a positive factor identified for female financial users
is their payment behavior, which tends to be better than that of
men, thus favorably impacting their credit risk levels.
However, it indicated that, despite the progress made in the last
decade, women face some challenges that hinder their
access to credit, including difficulties entering the
labor market and a lack of collateral (in this case, co-borrowers).
In this regard, the ABA specified that a higher percentage of women have a
mortgage without a co-borrower; that is, 76.2% of them obtain the
loan without any guarantee, while in the male portfolio this
percentage is 63.1%.
The association emphasized that there are various initiatives within the commercial banking sector that
aim to promote policies and initiatives to strengthen gender equality
in both productive and personal aspects.
