SANTO DOMINGO.- In the implementation of the request for coercive measures, the prosecutors in charge asked the courts that Antonio Espaillat be under preventive detention for 18 months and that his sister, Maribel Espaillat, serve house arrest.
The petition, whose hearing will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m., includes the declaration of the case as complex.
Yesterday, Monday, the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, justified the request of the Public Ministry, highlighting that the Public Ministry has a focused vision to try to compensate citizens for the events that have a high social impact.
The body accuses the Espaillat brothers of "involuntary manslaughter " for the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub, which on April 8 of this year caused the death of 236 people and left more than 180 injured, at a time when the merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who died in the incident, was entertaining the traditional Monday party at the emblematic nightclub.
After leaving the Ombudsman's accountability session in the Senate, Yeni Berenice commented that "society deserves" for the Public Prosecutor's Office to pursue cases like that of the Jet Set, which, as she reiterated, have a high social impact.
"If you look at our entire track record , in this case we have been no different," the prosecutor emphasized, referring to other high-profile cases of alleged corruption, where the Public Prosecutor's Office has always requested preventive detention to guarantee the investigation.
The Public Prosecutor's Office states in the request for coercive measures that the Espaillat brothers showed "immense irresponsibility and negligence" by failing to carry out a physical intervention that would have prevented the roof of the entertainment center from collapsing.
The document also refers to actions taken by the defendants to try to intimidate or manipulate employees of the company Inversiones E y L, SRL, which managed the Jet Set Club nightclub, and who may serve as witnesses in this process.
