SANTO DOMINGO. – Cemex Dominicana announced last Monday the signing of an agreement to sell its operations in the country for US$950 million to Cementos Progreso (CEMPRO), and whose transaction includes the export business to neighboring Haiti.
Cemex Dominicana began operations in the country in 1976 as Cementos Nacionales, SA, and currently has a production capacity of 700,000 tons of cement per year, according to its website.
But who is Cementos Progreso? According to the company's website, CEMPRO is a family business of Guatemalan origin founded in 1899 by Carlos Federico Novella Kleé, an entrepreneurial and visionary man.
The company is part of Progreso, with more than a century in the production and marketing of cement, concrete, lime and other products, services and solutions for construction with clients in Central America, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, the Caribbean and part of South America.
The company notes that it is recognized for its code of values, ethics and conduct, which has allowed it to enter the ranking of The World's Most Ethical Companies for six consecutive years, for its compliance practices awarded by the Ethisphere Institute of New York.
Furthermore, it has been recognized as one of the best companies to work for in Latin America and the best in Central America and the Caribbean, by the Great Place to Work Institute every year since 2010.

In addition, it has a production nursery with a capacity of 1.3 million trees per year and a wastewater treatment system, a wetland, with which water is reused within the plant, the information explains.
It highlights that its production reaches 1.94 million metric tons/year of clinker – 2.93 million metric tons/year of cement.
Located in Guatemala, the San Gabriel plant began operations in 2018, with an estimated production of 2.2 million metric tons/year of cement. “It is the largest cement production plant in the region and one of the most modern in Latin America dedicated to the production of clinker and hydraulic cements,” official documents state.
It also has a production nursery with a capacity of 500,000 seedlings of forest species per year and with the capacity to treat 10,563 cubic meters of wastewater to be reused in fertigation annually.
