SANTO DOMINGO.- A team of specialist engineers from the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie) and the Commission for the Supervision of Public Infrastructure in the Face of Climate Change, is advancing in the inspection and evaluation of bridges, overpasses and other infrastructure in different municipalities of the country to detect and determine the vulnerability that affects their proper functioning.
Among the infrastructures evaluated are: the bridge over the Camú River, on Antonio Guzmán Fernández Avenue, in La Vega, the overpass on Salvador Estrella Sadhala Avenue, in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Bridge (formerly the 17th Street Bridge), in Santo Domingo, the overpass at kilometer 14 of the Duarte Highway, and the Lucas Díaz Bridge that connects Peravia and San Cristóbal.
In that same order, the following were evaluated: the overpasses of the John F. Kennedy Avenue corridor, the overpasses of the February 27th corridor in the National District, the Charles de Gaulle Avenue overpass with Hermanas Mirabal in Santo Domingo Norte, the Mauricio Báez bridge in San Pedro de Macorís, the Villa Caoba bridge in La Romana, the 13th bridge on the Higüey-La Romana highway, the La Romana airport bridge, and the bridges over the Nizao, Nigua, and Yubazo rivers in San Cristóbal-Peravia.
The following bridges were also inspected: General Gregorio Luperón (La Barquita) Santo Domingo East, the bridge over the Jaya River in San Francisco de Macorís, the Coral Highway overpass in La Romana, the Railroad Bridge in La Romana, the bridge over the Calimetes stream in Los Cacaos, San Cristóbal, and the bridge over the Nizao River resort in Peravia, among others, according to a press release.
The assessment and inspection aims to find feasible solutions and recommendations as soon as possible as a preventive measure for the conservation and resilience of the aforementioned communication routes in the event of an earthquake.
The Public Infrastructure Oversight Commission in the Face of Climate Change was created by decree number 603-23 with the purpose of identifying as soon as possible the vulnerabilities of the main public works, overpasses, tunnels, elevated structures, bridges, pedestrian bridges, slopes in critical condition and public buildings.
