SANTO DOMINGO. – The tax reform that has been debated in the country in recent weeks will be the main topic addressed tonight, October 27, 2021, by President Luis Abinader, who will speak to the Dominican nation through a broadcast on radio, television, and digital platforms.
In the speech scheduled for 7:00 p.m., the country's president will state his position on several issues, including the reform dialogue and the crisis in Haiti, said the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza.
“It is appropriate to announce to the country that President Abinader will speak tomorrow (today), at 7:00 p.m., on a television and radio broadcast and on government digital platforms, about various topics. Obviously, he will address the tax reform that has been so widely discussed in different sectors,” Paliza stated in an interview on the morning television program Hoy Mismo, which airs on Color Visión.
The issue of tax reform has generated great rejection among some of the population and business owners, who even suggest that a "fiscal pact" be made instead of the possible reform.
For the past two weeks, a draft tax reform project has been circulating among economists and opinion leaders, attributed to the government, but officials deny that it is the final version.
According to press reports, the project aims to increase revenue by raising income tax rates, taxing exempt products with the Transfer Tax on Goods and Services (ITBIS), increasing property taxes, and eliminating tax exemptions.
