Volunteers from Grupo Popular plant 5,000 trees in Plan Sierra

A total of 180 volunteer collaborators from Grupo Popular participated in a reforestation day in partnership with Plan Sierra, in which they planted 5,000 trees in the community of Bohío Viejo, in Los Montones Abajo, San José de las Matas.

During the day, native and endemic species such as pine, yellow pine, native pine, golden pine, Juan Primero, mahogany, native mahogany, and oak were planted. These varieties contribute to forest restoration, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of water resources in the area.

In addition, as part of its commitment to promoting sustainability and protecting the environment, students from the Banco Popular Dominicano's Popular Excellence scholarship program were invited to the event, as well as other strategic partners, who collaborated with the volunteers in the reforestation of an area of 50 tareas, contributing significantly to the restoration of the Inoa micro-basin, within the Bao River sub-basin.

During his opening remarks, the CEO of Grupo Popular, René Grullón Finet, stated that “by planting these trees, we are planting hope, life, and commitment. Each tree we place in the ground today is a reminder that change begins with small actions, with hands willing to work, with hearts aware of the impact we can generate.”.

Present at the event were José Mármol, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications, Reputation and Responsible Banking; Mariel Bera, Vice President of Corporate Relations and Responsible Banking; Ricardo de la Rocha, Vice President of the Corporate and Business Area of the Northern Zone; and Dinorah Grullón, Manager of the Projects Division, who accompanied the volunteers and allies in this significant environmental initiative.

Representing Plan Sierra were Inmaculada Adames, Executive Vice President; William Guzmán, Director of Ecological and Social Planning; Loranny Santos and José Miguel Rivas, coordinators of the Ámina sub-basin and the Inoa micro-basin, respectively. Also present was José Óscar Rodríguez, representing Sucesión Morales, the owners of the property where the reforestation effort took place.

A legacy for future generations

The reforestation days are part of the business group's sustainability model, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It is expected that, once these 5,000 trees reach maturity, they will capture 1,600 tons of carbon dioxide annually, retain 15 million liters of water, and store 600,000 kilograms of soil, all contributing to the ecological stability of the area.

Through these planting days, which the institution's volunteers have been carrying out for more than two decades, the Popular Group continues to demonstrate that economic growth and environmental conservation must go hand in hand, generating well-being for society and promoting a greener and more resilient country.
