SANTO DOMINGO.- Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 31st of this year, commercial flights to and from the Dominican Republic will be temporarily suspended, as announced yesterday, Monday, by the Venezuelan Ministry of Transportation.
In a statement released yesterday, it was reported that this measure will come into effect at 8:00 pm tomorrow, Wednesday, July 31, local time in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan government made this decision after rejecting the "interference actions" of other nations regarding the results of the presidential elections.
Prior to this measure, Venezuela demanded that the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama and Uruguay "immediately withdraw their representatives from Venezuelan territory.".
He also decided to "withdraw all diplomatic staff from missions" in these seven Latin American countries.
The elections
The National Electoral Council (CNE) officially proclaimed Nicolás Maduro president early Monday morning with 51.2% of the votes, the same result it provided when 80% of the ballots had been counted and more than two million votes remained to be tallied.
According to the data, opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia obtained 44.2% of the votes, according to the first and only public report from the CNE.
However, anti-Chavista leader María Corina Machado asserted that the majority opposition obtained 73% of the ballots cast in the presidential elections, which, according to her, give González Urrutia a resounding victory.
