Work absenteeism continues to rise due to the COVID-19 outbreak. AEI closes its offices

Yesterday the Dominican Republic broke its record for infections again, registering 5,201 new cases out of 19,188 samples processed in the last 24 hours.

SANTO DOMINGO.- COVID-19 and its variants continue to halt the country's productive life and generate new absences of personnel in both public and private offices every day.

Yesterday, the AEI, the Association of Real Estate Agents and Companies, announced that it was forced to close its operations, as its staff tested positive for COVID-19.

“Our offices will be closed until Tuesday, January 11, due to staff health reasons,” states the press release sent to this media outlet and posted on its Instagram account aeiorg.

Yesterday the Dominican Republic broke its record for infections again, registering 5,201 new cases out of 19,188 samples processed in the last 24 hours, with Omicron being the predominant variant after 83% of the tests at the end of December tested positive for it.

AEI, which has 721 agents and 135 real estate companies, according to its website, notified its members that it will continue to offer its services via WhatsApp at 829-763-5659 from 9 am to 5 pm.

Real estate sector affected

Yesterday, El Inmobiliario published a report in which 71.4% of a group of real estate and construction companies consulted reported staff absences because they are positive for COVID-19 or are suffering from the flu virus that is currently affecting the country.

The percentage of salespeople, collaborators, technicians and laborers who have not been able to show up to the offices this new year or who have had to be sent home, ranges between 10 and 15%, according to a survey conducted via WhatsApp.

Of the 21 companies contacted, only six responded that they have all their staff integrated, and in some cases, when counted individually, the number rises significantly, such as in the case of a real estate company, where only one person is healthy.

Full outbreak in the Eastern region

At least 151 health professionals in provinces in the eastern region of the country have tested positive for COVID-19 , with La Altagracia and San Pedro de Macorís registering the highest number of infections, as reported yesterday by Diario Libre.

Pedro Claxtón, regional health director, told that media outlet that in the province of La Altagracia 62 doctors are infected with coronavirus, 26 in El Seibo and 24 in the Evangelina Rodriguez Perozo Hospital, in Yuma.

Claxtón asserted that the situation is due to the fact that the new strain of omicron is highly contagious and stated that it appears the doctors “had let their guard down”.

In the North

Absenteeism in companies and commercial establishments, due to the resurgence of Covid-19, the flu and the Omicron variant, is worrying industrialists and merchants in the Northern region, Listín Diario reports today.

In this regard, the president of the Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Santiago (ACIS), Sandy Filpo, told the media that the situation is affecting the work activities of many companies.

He said that some business owners and merchants have reported that they are working with a reduced number of employees because many have tested positive for Covid-19 and, although they have not required hospitalization, they have been sent home for observation and recovery.

“The absenteeism that has occurred in companies in recent days due to the resurgence of Covid-19 ,” Filpo lamented. In clinics and hospitals

Also in clinics and hospitals in Santiago and other provinces of Cibao, absenteeism is growing among doctors, nurses and administrative staff, due to the spread of the virus.

This is causing overcrowding at both private and public healthcare facilities. The president of the ADP Municipal Committee, Miguel Jorge, said it would be a serious mistake to reopen schools.
