Energy production in Pedernales is insufficient for the Cabo Rojo tourism development in that province, which is being promoted by the government of Luis Abinader. Therefore, the planned construction of a solar farm among the sources of energy needed to diversify the region's energy mix.
According to the estimates set out in the plan, energy demand would increase to 72% in the next 20 years, as hotel projects are developed.
By 2015, establishments in Pedernales with the largest number of employees estimated that, in percentage terms, salary expenses ranked second, only behind the cost of electricity, which in some cases represented up to 60% of total expenses.

In Pedernales is the Los Cocos Wind Farm, managed by the company EGE Haina, with a nominal capacity of 5.1 MVA (megavoltampere).
In the province, which is one of the three poorest in the country, there are also homes that lack electricity or suffer continuous power outages.

“Power outages, which have decreased in recent years, severely affect the hospitality sector, as they prevent quality service in hotels,” states the development outlined by the government in a 377-page book containing technical reports from a team of consultants.

The level of solar radiation in the southwest region provides favorable conditions for the development of a solar farm that would allow the resort to meet its energy needs, which is one of its primary energy objectives. This would complement the existing wind power generation.
