The sector is committed to training and upskilling the workforce as the only way to Dominicanize and dignify construction work.
SANTO DOMINGO – The seventh Housing Roundtable served as a platform for various announcements regarding plans and proposals that will guide the construction industry's actions in the coming years. The issue of labor was among the topics discussed, and both President Luis Abinader and the organizing entity, ACOPROVI (Association of Housing Builders and Developers), made commitments in this regard.
President Luis Abinader announced the creation of a special fund for the modernization of construction work and the regulation of foreign labor, stating that the fund will be created in conjunction with the Ministry of Labor to make work in that sector more efficient.
For his part, Jorge Montalvo, president of ACOPROVI, said that the sector is committed to training and modernizing the workforce as the only way to Dominicanize and dignify construction work.
"The housing sector is very aware of the job creation in our country, contributing approximately 365,000 direct jobs. That's why we recently signed an agreement with INFOTEP to promote the training of our workers. We have also requested the collaboration of the Ministry of Labor to meet the high demand for Dominican workers in the various areas of construction, given the sector's strong growth in recent months," Montalvo stated.
He also said that the entity he represents requested mediation before the social security council to allow "our workers to contribute based on their real salary in the construction sector and for the days worked and not based on the salary of those not in the sector as is happening at the moment, all this as a way to contribute more and more to the protection and regularization of the workforce in the sector.".
