With the purpose of strengthening the resilience of buildings to seismic events, the training of more than 40 engineering professionals belonging to the Nucleus of Civil Engineers, residing in Santiago de los Caballeros, began in Santiago last weekend, within the framework of the Dominican Network of Structural Evaluators (REED).
The program is funded by the European Union, through the Project for Strengthening Disaster Risk Management in the Dominican Republic (Progeri-RD), the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA) and the executive directorate of Civil Defense (DC).
A press release highlights that this initiative is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants in the evaluation of buildings before and after earthquakes.
The program of activities will be delivered in nine weeks, which includes eight face-to-face classes every Saturday, being trained in the implementation and use of the electronic tool for the Methodology of the Evaluation of Seismic Vulnerability, «Program of recognition, Evaluation and Estimation of Risk (Prever),» explains the press document.

Juan José Santos, president of the Northern Regional branch of CODIA, encouraged the participation of each of those present, predicting the success of the training.
Leonardo Reyes Madera, general director of Onesvie, upon inaugurating the diploma program at the Northern Regional office, stated that its purpose is to have professionals who are capable of evaluating buildings, infrastructure, and lifelines before, during, and after an earthquake.
Meanwhile, Juan Salas, president of the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and executive director of Civil Defense (DC), expressed his gratitude for the participation and highlighted that this fourth edition of the diploma course marks the beginning of a new era in promoting resilience in infrastructure.
Yanelba Abreu, administrator of Progeri-RD, urged the participating professionals to make a firm commitment to the country, becoming a fundamental force for the evaluation of buildings and infrastructure. In this regard, she requested that they be prepared to respond to a potential earthquake, demonstrating their willingness to act if needed.
Finally, Juan Villar González, president of CODIA, after expressing his gratitude for the start of and participation in the diploma program, mentioned that this program is made possible through an agreement with Onesvie and other collaborating institutions. He emphasized its objective of strengthening the skills of its members in the seismic evaluation of built structures.
