SANTO DOMINGO. – In anticipation of International Clean Energy Day on January 26, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a cooperation agreement to electrify homes with clean energy in remote areas of the country through micro hydroelectric plants.
This agreement, signed at the MEM headquarters, commits these entities to join efforts to ensure that the rural and suburban population of the country has universal access to electricity from water sources for different uses, powered by renewable energies, in a more timely manner, of the best quality and under sustainable environmental conditions.
The initiative will impact thousands of people and contribute positively to the environment, as thousands of hectares of forests will be cared for and restored thanks to the actions of the beneficiary communities.
In addition, social cohesion, community empowerment, and livelihoods will be promoted. The meeting was led by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte, and the UNDP Resident Representative, Inka Mattila.
