SANTO DOMINGO. - For the Association of Housing Builders and Developers (Acoprovi), innovation in sustainability in construction processes is a high priority, aiming to shift the country's focus towards this issue, along with regulations and financial facilities that allow access for all.
This was announced by Annerys Meléndez, president of Acoprovi, during the meeting "Advances towards sustainable construction", an event she held in conjunction with Cemex Dominicana and Gerdau Metaldom, where they analyzed the positive impact of sustainable construction.
A press release notes that during the activity, the advantages of designing, planning and executing real estate projects that incorporate sustainability criteria and the care of natural resources were highlighted, as well as the short, medium and long-term benefits of sustainable construction.
He adds that emphasis was also placed on the need to continue making progress on regulatory issues, strengthening the country's strategy against climate change, and on tangible solutions that promote public policies and good practices from the private sector, given the Dominican Republic's vulnerability to climate change.

Ileana Rojas, Environment Manager at Gerdau Metaldom, spoke about "Steel and its impact on sustainable construction," where she explained why the development and use of products with a smaller environmental footprint is important, such as the corrugated rod, a pioneer in Central America and the Caribbean, which certifies a content of more than 18% recycled material, in addition to the potential savings generated by the use of cut and shaped products.
Braulio Matos, infrastructure advisor for Cemex Dominicana, highlighted the company's commitment to sustainability through its global strategy, Future in Action, which focuses on achieving sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity, and natural resource management with the goal of becoming a company with zero CO₂ emissions, explains the press release.
It adds that through this project, sustainable products and solutions with a smaller carbon footprint are promoted, reducing carbon dioxide emissions thanks to the use of alternative raw materials and the increasing use of renewable energy sources.
The press release details that Cemex is one of the first companies in the global cement industry to validate its 2030 decarbonization goals with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to align with its 1.5°C scenario, which sets the industry's most ambitious path.
The event also featured a special presentation by Julio Lozano, Director of Economics and Banking Studies at the Association of Multiple Banks (ABA), who explained how the financial system is joining the fight against climate change and contributing to sustainable real estate projects through green financing.
In addition, engineer Mariely Ponciano gave a presentation titled "Registration and monitoring system for generators of special handling waste and hazardous waste," as well as executives allied to the sector such as Julissa Báez, executive director of the Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (ADOCEM), and members of Acoprovi.
