SANTO DOMINGO - President Luis Abinader inaugurated the construction of a modern passenger terminal at Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA) , on Wednesday, with an investment of 250 million dollars to expand capacity and improve the traveler experience.
The project is poised to become a regional benchmark thanks to its modern design, functionality, and focus on sustainability . The new terminal building will be distributed across three levels and will incorporate the latest technology and operational efficiency.
For his part, the Minister of Public Works and President of the Airport Commission, Eduardo Estrella , stated that the Las Américas International Airport (AILA) will have a significant impact on both residents and the development of tourism in the Dominican Republic thanks to this project. He noted that the new terminal will help streamline arrival and departure processes for travelers, thus improving the airport's operational efficiency.
He added that the infrastructure will have an area of 33,000 square meters and 10 boarding gates , which will allow it to receive up to 4 million additional passengers per year.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister David Collado highlighted that Las Américas International Airport (AILA) had not undergone this type of intervention since 1956.
Collado also announced that the La Caleta underwater park , which had been abandoned and deteriorated for 50 years, will be reopened in September. The park is now 90% complete and will feature parking, lighting, recreational areas, a beach, food courts, and other amenities for tourists .
Likewise, Aerodom's CEO, Mónika Infante, stated that the project initiated today constitutes a historic milestone for the airport infrastructure of the Dominican Republic.
The terminal will feature an arrivals area equipped with an automated baggage handling system and four conveyor belts, a departures area with 38 check-in counters, four security lanes, two VIP lounges, and boarding gates with 10 positions. It will also offer spacious waiting areas and a revamped selection of shops and restaurants for passengers.

The project includes a new aviation platform with the capacity to operate up to 13 aircraft simultaneously and 900 new parking spaces for vehicles.
Present were the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza , and the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre , as well as the Commander of the Air Force, Major General Pilot Floreal T. Suárez Martínez.
Also present were the director of the National Police, Major General Ramón Antonio Guzmán Peralta ; the director of Migration, Vice Admiral Luis Rafael Lee Ballester ; the director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez ; the director of the Airport Department, Víctor Pichardo ; the director of ProDominicana, Biviana Riveiro ; and the director of the Specialized Airport and Civil Aviation Security Corps (Cesac), Brigadier General Pilot Enmanuel Souffront Tamayo (FARD), as well as the French ambassador to the country, Sonia Barbry.
