SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Mining Corporation (Cormidom) reported today that they are working on the construction of two tunnels to rescue the miners trapped since last Sunday in the Cerro de Maimón mine, located in the province of Monseñor Nouel.
Paul Marinko, president of the company, reported that while they are digging they are placing steel arches to strengthen the tunnels and guarantee the lives of the miners Carlos Yépez Ospina (Colombian) and Gregory Alexander Méndez Torres (Dominican), as well as those of the rescuers.
He indicated that they cannot estimate how long the rescue of the trapped workers will take due to the vulnerability of the terrain.
The mining company executive said that production activities at Cerro de Maimón will not be restored until the lives of all employees are safe.

Currently, 70 people are working on the rescue efforts, including specialists from Canada.
Visit of Minister Antonio Almonte
This morning, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte, visited the mine. He indicated that landslides in underground mines are common.
He also highlighted the technical criteria used by Cormidom in the rescue process. Canadian specialists are working on the operation, along with members of all the Dominican Republic's relief agencies.
The official indicated that once the rescue of the two workers is complete, the mining company will undergo an evaluation process to determine if the Dominican Mining Corporation ( Cormidom ), whose company operates the mine, needs to correct some shortcomings.
