It's summertime, and everyone needs a fan at home, so don't forget to clean them before using them, or all the dust accumulated on the blades will spread throughout the room. Cleaning ceiling fans isn't easy or convenient, but we have a great trick for removing dust more easily.
How often do they need to be cleaned
It's one of the most frequently asked questions. Well, ceiling fans need to be cleaned regularly, at least once a week, as they tend to accumulate quite a bit of dust. And for a more thorough cleaning, it's recommended to clean them at least once a month, especially during the warmer months.
How to clean a ceiling fan step by step
The first thing you should do is turn off the fan or lower the switch if you prefer to be a little safer. Next, use a sturdy stool that allows you to comfortably reach the fan. It's a good idea to have someone with you while you clean, in case you need help.
The next step is to open the windows wide. It's recommended to clean the fan in the morning so you can see the dirt clearly as you remove it. It's also a good idea to put an old sheet under the fan to prevent any remaining dirt from spreading to the rest of the room.
What you need
- Stool/ladder
- Pillowcase
- Microfiber cloth or rag
- Duster
- White vinegar
- Warm soapy water
Step by step
Prepare the area around the fan with all the products you need nearby.
Place a clean pillowcase over the end of one of the fan blades. Use your fingers to hold the opening of the pillowcase securely around the blade. Slide the pillowcase along the blade to collect all the dust.
Repeat the same step as before, but for each blade.
If you notice the fan blades are dirtier than usual, you can add a mixture of white cleaning vinegar and warm water. This will give the fan a deeper clean.
Continue cleaning the rest of the fan. Use a microfiber cloth to remove dust from the fan motor housing.
Shake out the pillowcase you used to clean the blades. Turn the pillowcase inside out and shake out the dust. You can wash the pillowcase in the washing machine without any problem.
How to clean the light bulb
If you're cleaning the fan and it has a light bulb, you can take the opportunity to remove the dirt from it as well.
Gently remove the light bulb. Make sure you have turned off the fan and lowered the lever before doing so.
Remove all dirt from the light bulb with a microfiber cloth before replacing it.
Before installing the light bulb, check that it's not burned out. If it is, take the opportunity to replace it with a new one.
Replace the light bulb, flip the lever up, and you're done.
