SANTO DOMINGO. -The “Alejandro E. Grullón E.” Chair of Sustainability at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and the Popular Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), have developed an initiative to promote sustainable, resilient, and inclusive tourism in the northern region of the country.
Through a series of workshops held in Santiago, Montecristi, and Puerto Plata, more than 80 participants from the tourism sector strengthened their capacity to implement sustainable practices. These training sessions, aimed at companies of all sizes within the tourism value chain, offered practical tools to reduce environmental impact, promote local economic development, and improve competitiveness in the context of a global market that prioritizes sustainability.

This effort seeks to position the Dominican Republic as a responsible and reliable tourist destination, reinforcing its appeal to both domestic and international tourists.
The training sessions were led by Lisette Gil Muñoz, a specialist in sustainable tourism, who shared her experience in managing sustainable destinations and impact measurement tools. The workshops also included group activities and experience-sharing sessions, enabling participants to design strategies tailored to their own specific situations.
This initiative highlights the commitment of PUCMM, Fundación Popular, and UNDP to the sustainable development of the tourism sector and its positive impact on local communities. As the program concluded, participants received certificates of participation and free access to educational materials, promoting the democratization of knowledge to achieve more equitable development.
