SANTO DOMINGO. – Today, Thursday, November 16, and tomorrow, Friday, November 17, the country is hosting the XXXII Latin American Trust Congress, an event organized by the Association of Multiple Banks of the Dominican Republic (ABA) together with the Latin American Federation of Banks (FELABAN).
The meeting begins at nine in the morning with speeches by Rosanna Ruiz, president of the ABA; Luis Augusto Zelaya, president of the Latin American Trust Committee (COLAFI) and Giorgio Trettenero Castro, Secretary General of the Latin American Federation of Banks (FELABAN).
The event will be inaugurated by Alejandro Fernandez, Superintendent of Banks of the Dominican Republic. At 10:00 a.m., Guillermo Herrera Castaño, president of the Colombian Chamber of Construction and former Minister of Housing of Colombia, will deliver the keynote address: "Evolution and Challenges of Housing Policy in Colombia.".
“Trust as an Engine of Sustainable Tourism Development: Experiences and Opportunities for the Future” will be presented by Andres Vanderhorst, CEO of Fiduciaria Reservas.
This is followed by the panel “Optimizing Fiscal Potential: Neutrality and Efficiency in Trusts” with José Eduardo Jiménez, Partner at Ruíz & Asociados Abogados, and Ramón Ortega, Regional Tax Leader at PwC. It will be moderated by Christian Molina, Executive President of the Dominican Association of Trust Companies (ASOFIDOM).
The afternoon will begin with the conference: “Nearshoring investment markets and why the trust is involved”, led by Eduardo Becker, Director of Investment Projects and Portfolios, Corporate Banking, MIFEL Financial Group, Mexico.
This is followed by “The financial trust model in Argentina, a benchmark innovation for the region”, presented by Dr. Marcelo A. Camerini and moderated by Luis Zelaya, President of the COLAFI Committee & Legal Manager of Banco Industrial Guatemala.
Thursday's session continues with the presentation "The role of the trustee for the development of Public-Private Partnerships," which will feature Sigmund Freund, Director General of Public-Private Partnerships, as the speaker, with Stella Villegas de Osorio acting as moderator.
The conference “Termination of the Trust: the beginning of the end” will feature Nasly Ustariz of 100% Banco Universal, legal consultant and director, as the speaker.
Thursday's session concludes with the panel "Digital Transformation as an Ally of the Trust," facilitated by Gabriel Campa, Head of Digital Assets Towerbank, and moderated by Christy López, Vice President of Colafi.
Remarkable success
In a press release, the ABA noted that real estate development trusts account for the largest number of initiatives in the Dominican Republic, at 79%, according to data from the Superintendency of Banks.
However, he argues that other types of trusts are used less frequently despite their great utility in fostering collective development and personal opportunities. He cited investment, estate planning, guarantee, administration, cultural, philanthropic, and educational trusts as examples.
"The trust, in its public form, becomes a key tool for channeling vital resources for the realization of projects, in public-private partnerships, which would otherwise be impossible due to the State's difficulty in executing them with its own resources," said the entity that brings together the country's multiple banks.
The Latin American Trust Congress will take place at the Sheraton Hotel located on the capital's boardwalk.
