SANTO DOMINGO. - The streets adjacent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit will be held from tomorrow until the 25th of this month, will not be permanently closed, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) clarified this Wednesday.
The organization explained that the avenue that will have the greatest impact will be George Washington (El Malecón), but that it will not be permanently closed, but only when the participants are passing through it.
The transit authority stated that, for security reasons for the dignitaries, it was decided to publish a sketch with alternative routes so that citizens could travel without interruption.
“In order to avoid giving out information that could affect the security of the heads of state, the Malecón will be closed, but only partially, for the transit of the summit participants, and once they have crossed, normal traffic will resume,” said Dary Terrero, head of communications for the entity.
He gave the example that at some point the participants in the Summit will go to the Ozama Fortress, some roads will be closed, but once they leave the place the streets will return to their normal flow.
The transit authority asked users who regularly travel along the Malecón to take into account that traffic may be suspended at any time, and therefore recommends using alternative routes as much as possible.
He specified that some of the affected areas would include Bella Vista, La Julia, Mata Hambre, Ciudad Nueva, Centro de Los Héroes, Zona Universitaria, Gascue, and others. He denied that there would be any changes to traffic flow during the three days of the summit.
The spokesperson for Intrant apologized to the public for any inconveniences that may arise from the measures that will be adopted to facilitate traffic flow together with the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transportation (Digesett).
Intrant reported that the alternate avenues will be José Contreras, Correa y Cidrón, Simón Bolívar, México, Mella and Independencia, among others.
