SANTO DOMINGO. - Manuel Jiménez, mayor of Santo Domingo East, highlighted that Avenida España will undergo a radical transformation in the coming months with the construction of luxury hotels in that area of Santo Domingo East, where a first-class tourist development is planned.
"In the remodeling area that runs from Punta Torrecilla to the National Aquarium, on Avenida España, there will be a first-class tourist development," the mayor told Listín Diario, adding that huge hotel towers will be built in the area and that permits for their construction have already begun to be given to Spanish and Dominican companies, and that there are three building designs that are already being offered for sale.
He explained that this district, which has more than one million inhabitants, will undergo an extraordinary change, which will mark the development of this area of the country, which is the largest in the entire region in terms of territory and resources, declared Mayor Jiménez.
“That’s going to be the longest boardwalk. A real luxury,” the mayor stated while talking with Miguel Franjul, director of Listín, about the plans being developed in the municipality, both in terms of territory, tourism, culture and in the area of health with the recovery and equipping of the municipal hospital of Ralma.
The Mayor said that the Santo Domingo East City Council (ASDE) has a four-year strategic plan, and a longer-term ten-year plan, including the new vision of the Mayor's Office to make that municipality the most important city in the country.
Jiménez cited among other attributes that Santo Domingo Este is the closest city to the country's most important international airport and the military airport, is next to the capital city and between the most important ports which are the Port of Santo Domingo and Punta Caucedo.
He argued that the area has 20 kilometers of sea, "and not just any sea," from Punta Torrecilla to Punta Caucedo, which is like a bay and is not common; it is shallow, soft, turquoise in color, very similar to the Pacific and suitable for all kinds of sports and tourist activities, and for having two or three marinas.
The area includes a tourist and cultural complex encompassing the Columbus Lighthouse, the Chencha cultural platform, which is a public bar where sonero activities take place; the bust of Juan Pablo Duarte, the Sugar Cane Monument, Los Tres Ojos, among others.
The province of Santo Domingo was created by Law 163-01. It has a history of more than 400 years alongside the capital city of Santiago.
It has a territorial extension of 170 square kilometers and is divided into three large constituencies, according to data provided by the mayor.
Management
According to the mayor, the municipality of Santo Domingo Este needs to be closely monitored because it is a large city that is growing and experiencing significant development.
Trustee Jiménez believes that more companies need to set up operations in the area, including offices of large companies that operate in Greater Santo Domingo, so that the municipality has more options.
“This city cannot be a workshop,” the mayor said, confirming some claims that this part is operating as a bedroom community, since the capital has most of the major services that citizens require, both in terms of high-level education and specialized health care.
He pointed out that Santo Domingo Este is the largest municipality in the Antilles.
“Santiago is a third of Santo Domingo Este,” he emphasized, explaining the territorial and population size of this part of the country.
It also includes all the provinces in the entire eastern part of the country.
Population
The municipality of Santo Domingo Este has a projected population of 1.2 million inhabitants. This is equivalent to five times the population of Moca, almost twice that of Santiago, seven times that of Barahona, ten times that of Azua, and 33 times that of Dajabón, according to data from the 2010 census.
This represented approximately 10% of the national population. ASDE receives 0.001% of the budget. Today, it represents more than 11% of the national population, Jiménez said.
Environment
The Mayor's Office created a municipal system of urban gardens and a new municipal animal shelter, which the entity says is unique in the country.
