Shaikha Al Nowais , from the United Arab Emirates , has become the first woman to lead the World Tourism Organization ( UN Tourism ), after winning the vote that took place this Friday within the framework of the organization's 123rd executive council.
Shaikha Al Nowais emerged victorious in the second round of the electoral process with 24 votes against the Greek candidate Harry Theoharis , sources from the organization told EFE.
- The representative from the United Arab Emirates was competing in the race for the organization's general secretary position with Muhammad Adam (Ghana), Habib Ammar (Tunisia), Gloria Guevara (Mexico) and the aforementioned Greek candidate.
Shaikha Al Nowais , who has been elected for the period 2026-2029 , will replace the current Secretary-General of UN Tourism , Zurab Pololikashvili, after eight years in office.
UN Tourism is headquartered in Madrid , although the 123rd meeting of the entity's Executive Council is being held this time in the Royal Site of San Ildefonso (central Spain), with an eye toward the upcoming General Assembly and the global challenges facing the sector.
