LA VEGA.- A section of the Pontón bridge on the Duarte Highway collapsed this Monday in this area, which had been out of service for two months due to advanced state of deterioration.
“MOPC reports that the Pontón bridge at the entrance to La Vega, one of whose sections collapsed today, had not been in operation for two months and since then the ministry had enabled alternative routes that have been functioning satisfactorily,” reads part of a brief statement from the aforementioned entity.

Likewise, the MOPC assured that the collapse of that section of the bridge does not affect traffic to and from the north of the country.
The bridge collapse occurred during Hurricane Fiona, which has caused significant material damage along its path through the country, primarily in towns on the East Coast.
Last Sunday, June 26, the Ministry of Public Works reported that there was "differential settling in the right lane of the Pontón bridge", in the municipality of La Vega, heading towards Santiago de los Caballeros.
