It turns 20 today. It is one of the seven municipalities created on October 16, 2001 by Law 163-01, when it was separated from the National District and the province of Santo Domingo was established.
The vast Santo Domingo East, or eastern zone as it's popularly known, has been one of the fastest-growing areas in recent decades. A vibrant commercial sector extends throughout its diverse neighborhoods, home to major national brands. The real estate sector has also seen significant growth.
