SANTIAGO.- With the joy and rhythm of typical quartet music, the first direct flight from Madrid, Spain to Santiago de Los Caballeros was received, in an event that marks a milestone in the history of the Cibao International Airport.
The flight operated by Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas, in conjunction with the VDT Air Consolidator and Travel Wholesaler Group, arrived at the airport at 3:46 p.m. last Saturday from Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport, carrying 268 Dominican and foreign passengers.
The Airbus 330 aircraft was greeted with a welcoming arch, and upon disembarking, passengers received gifts while members of the Ministry of Tourism's folk ballet performed traditional merengue dances. Passengers expressed their satisfaction at being able to land directly in Santiago.
According to information provided by Cibao airport executives, there is no fixed route at the moment, however negotiations are underway to make it permanent in the future.
It was also said that other dates were scheduled for the flight to operate again, on December 17 and 21, on the Madrid-Santiago route, and also on January 13 and 20, 2023, on the Santiago-Santo Domingo-Madrid route.
Félix María García, president of the Board of Directors of Cibao Airport, highlighted the importance of this operation, which he assures, positively impacts the momentum that Santiago has had as a destination with the opening of routes that contribute to the economic and tourist development of this area.
David Blázquez, Corporate Sales Director in Madrid for the airline Plus Ultra, highlighted the important management of the Cibao airport authorities and the VTD Group in making this objective a reality.
Lilian Núñez, CEO of the VDT Group, thanked everyone involved in this project for their support and for witnessing this "historic event".
