After a delay of almost a month that resulted in a fine for the construction company, the renovated boardwalk of San Pedro de Macorís was finally inaugurated last Saturday, a project that had not undergone any significant work for more than 50 years.
President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado inaugurated the space for the community's enjoyment, a reconstruction project that involved an investment of RD$290,529,675.32, according to a press release.
On Sunday, November 23, David Collado announced a fine of 4 million pesos to the contractor in charge of the reconstruction of the San Pedro de Macorís boardwalk, due to the failure to meet the established deadlines for the completion of the work.
The remodeling
According to the press document, the intervention of the space consisted of the reconstruction of the 1.84 Kilometer coastal shoreline of the boardwalk, creating a linear park with a total intervention area of 60,000 square meters, which includes 12,000 square meters of sidewalks.
It consists of two recreation areas, a business area that houses 9 double sales modules, bathrooms, a guardhouse for Politur and its equipment for the common areas.
A second plaza with a recreation area, 1 sales module and a photo stop with local folkloric figures of the "Guloyas", declared by UNESCO as Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
“As promised, here we are, with the remodeled boardwalk of San Pedro de Macorís, a long-standing demand of its residents, for their full enjoyment,” Collado stated as he led the opening ceremony.
The project also features landscaping along the entire length of the boardwalk, the central island, and the waterfront. It also includes a children's playground, an outdoor gym, a universal access ramp, lighting, and other amenities.
It was executed by the Executive Committee for Infrastructure in Tourist Zones, (CEIZTUR).
