SANTO DOMINGO - The General Directorate of Customs and the Punta Cana International Airport presented yesterday the latest generation X-ray machine, ORION® 928DX, for the non-intrusive and precise inspection of luggage, as required by the new Customs law.
Customs explained that this machine with the Rapiscan system is a dual generator device for viewing images at two angles (horizontal and vertical), according to a press release.
The event was led by Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, Director General of Customs; Frank Elías Rainieri, President and CEO of Grupo Puntacana; Giovanni Rainieri, Director of Airside Operations and Mr. Alberto Smith, Director of Landside Operations of the Punta Cana International Airport.
Sanz Lovatón said that the use of this technology ensures national security and combats illicit trade.

Meanwhile, the president and CEO of Grupo Punta Cana, Frank Elías Rainieri, highlighted that the Punta Cana International Airport handles 60% of all passengers arriving in the country and that this scanner will facilitate their arrival process.
About the machine
He explained that the equipment allows a penetration of 35 millimeters into the steel, for better visualization of the scanned objects, with a low ramp to facilitate the passenger's quick and comfortable placement of luggage.
According to the information, this equipment will expedite the passenger disembarkation process at the terminal by avoiding physical inspection and opening of luggage for travelers arriving in the country through that airport , possible .
These scanners are designed to detect a wide range of explosives and narcotics in real time during the scanning process, flagging a potential threat on the X-ray image, thanks to the detection algorithms of “Rapiscan®™ Systems”.
It also serves to identify organic materials by highlighting areas based on the range selected by the operator, and/or in interactive mode which allows the operator the option to display areas in pixel values.
The terminal welcomes more than eight million tourists in transit annually, and has projected further growth for the coming years.
