During the Easter holiday, the passage of heavy vehicles will be restricted.
SANTO DOMINGO. -The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) reported yesterday, Friday, that the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Bridge (known as the 17th Street Bridge) is safe for use, stating that the structure has an articulated system of interconnections that allows for an efficient distribution of loads, which constitutes an advantage in terms of structural safety according to international standards.
"All the work currently underway is aimed at extending the bridge's lifespan, ensuring the safety of citizens, and preserving a vital piece of infrastructure for urban mobility. At the same time, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), the National Office for Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings, and the contracting company PINSA are constantly monitoring its structural behavior," a press release from the agency states.
The Public Works Department explains that, although visual signs of wear or deterioration may be observed in some parts of the bridge, these do not necessarily represent a structural risk. "The articulated design of the structure is conceived to absorb loads and movements, which is normal in infrastructure of this nature and age.".
He adds that as part of the improvement process, the MOPC has planned to take advantage of the Easter holiday — a time when vehicular traffic is considerably reduced — to intervene in specific structural elements, in compliance with the established schedule.
"During this period, and to preserve the safety of all users and the technical staff who will be working, the passage of heavy vehicles will be temporarily limited. This measure will be communicated in due course through official channels.".
He emphasizes that the work being carried out involves a highly qualified mixed team, made up of Dominican technicians and foreign specialists who were part of the original design and installation of the bridge, which guarantees a deep understanding of its operation and the most appropriate solutions for its preservation.
"The MOPC reiterates its commitment to road safety and the modernization of national infrastructure, working with technical rigor and under the highest engineering standards to guarantee safe and efficient transit for all citizens," the document emphasizes.
