The works, which begin in 2026, cover construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation and supervision of bridges in different regions.
SANTO DOMINGO – The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced the opening of an international public bidding process for the repair of 53 bridges located in 15 provinces across the country. This initiative is the first phase of a national plan encompassing more than 150 road structures.
The works, which will begin in 2026, encompass the construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and monitoring of bridges in various regions. This phase is expected to see the construction of 26 new bridges and the reconstruction of 27 others, with the aim of strengthening road safety, climate resilience, and structural stability.
Beneficiary provinces
The territories included are San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, Montecristi, María Trinidad Sánchez, Azua, Duarte, Santo Domingo, Elías Piña, San Juan, La Vega, Valverde, Hato Mayor, Sánchez Ramírez, Puerto Plata, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel, and Santiago Rodríguez. The estimated completion time for the works is 18 months.
Funding and scope
The project, called “Climate resilience management of bridge infrastructure in the Dominican Republic”, is under the responsibility of the Executing Unit for Projects Financed with External Resources and is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through loan agreement 5901/OC-DR.
The program includes the installation of piles, assembly of structural steel, signage, and road safety measures . It also includes functional restoration, access improvements, provision of climate resilience equipment, and environmental and social management, with plans for environmental control, workplace safety, community engagement, and emergency response during construction.
Objectives:
The intervention aims to reduce vulnerabilities to climate change , extend the lifespan of infrastructure, and improve the competitiveness of national transport and logistics. It also seeks to integrate the territory, support productive development, and facilitate the Dominican Republic's integration into international markets.
