Public Works announces awarding of road rehabilitation contracts to 5 contractors with a projected investment of over RD$2 billion

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Minister of Public Works and Communications, Deligne Ascención, presented the award certificates to representatives of five contracting companies that will participate in the rehabilitation work of two important highways that connect two sub-regions of the country, projects that are located in the provinces of Barahona and Monte Plata and that will begin next January.

Ascención explained that the amount of these contracts is 2 billion 345 million 243 thousand 988 pesos with 09 cents, which are carried out with the endorsement and financing of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

“We are delivering the award certificates to five companies that participate in the work of the IDB program, which is executed through the MOPC, via the Executing Unit of Projects Financed with External Resources (UEPFRE), and which consists of the rehabilitation of two important roads that connect both sub-regions and/or regions of the country,” he stated.

In a press release signed by the Directorate of Communications of Public Works, it is specified that the delivery of the certificates took place in the Conference Room of the MOPC, and also included the participation of Cristian Borrero, director of the Project Execution Unit; and Lucía Cedeño.

The first road runs from Enriquillo to Cabral, a new alternate route that will connect that part of the Southwest coast, specifically in the province of Barahona, linking Enriquillo, El Higüero, Polo, and Cabral with a length of 51.9 km. The investment in this road is approximately RD$1,134,815,385.64.

While the other will allow land communication between the Cibao-South and the East through Cevicos, Monte Plata and Bayaguana, and will link Monte Plata with Bayaguana, and Monte Plata with Cevicos, with an investment of RD$1,210,428,602.45 and a length of 62.01 km.

Minister Ascención said that the Cabral to Enriquillo road will have an impact on the Enriquillo Lake sub-region, "especially because it should be an internal communication point towards Pedernales.".

He also mentioned the advantages for intra-regional communication offered by the Bayaguana-Monte Plata and Monte Plata-Cevicos highways, adding that the Bayaguana-Hato Mayor highway (still under construction) will connect the Cibao-South and Central regions with the East, without having to go through the capital.

The winning firms are Constructora Teddy, represented by engineer Kelvin Perdomo; Constructora Cogusa, by engineer Rafael Guzmán; IDC Construcción, by engineer Carlos Jáquez; Faneyte y Genao (Fagenca), by engineer Fernando Faneyte; and Remix, SA, by engineer Gonzalo Bobadilla.

Cristian Borrero, director of the Project Implementation Unit, said that work on both projects will begin at the end of January next year, and that they consist of five sections in total.

He highlighted the importance of these projects for the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), while noting that the southern part of the country is receiving significant attention from the government of President Luis Abinader.

“By contributing our small part to the connectivity needed to enable access to markets, health services, and other basic services for the population,” he said.

Lucía Cedeño, assistant to the director of the Project Execution Unit, announced that the supervision contract is in the process of calling for expressions of interest, and that due to requirements of the IDB, a call has been made to the UN, and that on the 27th this expression of interest will be opened and a document will be presented to them so that they can present the proposals.

The objectives of the road projects of the Implementing Unit are intended to contribute to improving regional connectivity by providing safe, reliable and accessible transport services, guaranteeing their availability for access to basic health, education and market services.

The work to be carried out in each project requires rehabilitation of the asphalt surface, repair and/or reconstruction of the existing longitudinal and transverse drainage, signage, improvement of urban access at intersections with local populations, among others.
