SANTO DOMINGO – The Ministry of Public Health called on the population to reinforce prevention measures during the rainy days, in order to avoid diseases such as dengue, leptospirosis, acute diarrhea and respiratory illnesses.
Key recommendations include:
• Drink only potable water; otherwise, boil, filter, or chlorinate it.
• Keep water tanks clean and covered to prevent mosquito breeding.
• Wash food and kitchen utensils thoroughly and store them safely.
• Avoid bathing in downpours or contaminated water to reduce the risk of leptospirosis.
• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
• Dispose of garbage properly, avoiding putting it out during rain.
The organization urged people not to self-medicate and to go to the nearest health center if they experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or general malaise.
She also asked that special attention be paid to at-risk groups: pregnant women, children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses or mental health conditions.
Construction
workers should take extra precautions, as their work in exposed areas with standing water makes them more vulnerable to leptospirosis. The use of boots, gloves, and appropriate clothing is recommended, as well as avoiding contact with stagnant or dirty water.
Finally, Public Health urged citizens to stay informed through official sources such as the COE and INDOMET.
