Streets in the historic Colonial City will be rehabilitated; President Abinader broke ground yesterday

The rehabilitation of the space will have an investment of five billion pesos and will initially cover 11 streets, with the intervention of their pavements and sidewalks, undergrounding of cables, replacement of drinking water, among other rehabilitation works, according to the information released at the meeting.

SANTO DOMINGO.- Las Damas, El Conde, Hostos, Luperón, Salomé Ureña, Duarte, 19 de Marzo, José Reyes, Las Mercedes, Arzobispo Nouel and Padre Billini, constitute the main streets within the 4.7 kilometers that will be covered by the project to restructure the roads of the Colonial City, a work in which an investment of about five billion pesos is projected.

Yesterday, President Luis Abinader broke ground to begin the works, where he completed an agenda dedicated to tourism in the Colonial City, and alongside him was the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, who highlighted the importance of the event.

This action is part of the works included in the Comprehensive Program for Tourism and Urban Development of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo (Pidtucccsd).

"The Colonial City represents a large part of Dominican culture, which is why it is important that every corner of this tourist attraction that we Dominicans possess is impeccable," the minister emphasized.

Before breaking ground, Abinader acknowledged the "treasure" that Dominicans possess in the destiny of that area and said that in the Colonial City not a single corner will be left unrestored.

“Let’s work in this space, because we benefit from it, let’s make this treasure shine brighter, protect it, sustain it, and keep it here as a legacy of our country,” the president stated.

About the program

The program is being carried out with a loan agreement for 90 million dollars signed between the Dominican State and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Its implementation is carried out by the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), through the Program Coordinating Unit (UCP), and in coordination with the Ministry of Culture (MINC) and the Mayor's Office of the National District (ADN).

In addition to rehabilitating the pavement of streets and sidewalks, the works include the rehabilitation of the water and sanitation network, the undergrounding of the electrical and telecommunications networks, the replacement of the drinking water network, an environmental plan, a pilot plan for electric buses or electromobility and a program for the improvement of the management and collection of solid waste, with the delivery of four electric collection trucks.

The street project includes the implementation of a mobility management plan to avoid hindering access and traffic in the historic center.
