Due to national mourning, Pedernales suspends recreational activities during Holy Week

Local authorities in Pedernales have ordered the suspension of all recreational and sporting activities on beaches, rivers, resorts and other public spaces, including the Cabo Rojo destination, La Cueva, urban areas and ecological wells, during the Easter 2025 period.

The provision issued in a memorandum expressly prohibits the use of "disco light" type sound equipment, the installation of platforms and tents, the holding of sporting games, as well as the circulation of motorcycles at high speed, without lights or with noisy exhausts.

The document outlining these measures was distributed to the relevant authorities, including the military, the National Police, Civil Defense, Politur, and the Environmental Protection Service, who will be responsible for enforcing the restrictions.

The letter states that "all parties and recreational activities in beach and resort areas are suspended during Holy Week 2025," calling on citizens to respect this provision.

In addition, the sporting activities that were scheduled for next Thursday were cancelled, according to Ambiorix Zapata, technical director of the games, coach and president of the Pedernales Sports Association.

Zapata explained that every year during Holy Week, sporting events such as beach athletics, basketball, volleyball, and human ball, among others, are held. However, he indicated that, on the instructions of David Ventura, the provincial sports coordinator, all these activities must be suspended as a sign of mourning for the victims of the Jet Set nightclub collapse on April 8, a tragedy that left more than 200 people dead.

“The community of Pedernales is deeply saddened by what happened. In addition, many local families have recently lost loved ones,” Zapata said.

As part of the preventive measures, since yesterday, Palm Sunday, the Preventive Police and the Digesett have impounded more than 100 motorcycles for various infractions, including lack of lights, use of non-regulatory mufflers and reckless driving.

Authorities reiterate that motorcycles will not be allowed to circulate at high speeds, without lights, or with noisy exhausts, and will reinforce surveillance in public spaces throughout Holy Week to guarantee citizen safety.
