SANTO DOMINGO.- With the aim of raising awareness about the importance of caring for the environment, collaborators from the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), led by the deputy director general, José Velázquez, participated in a day of collecting solid waste on Güibia beach.
The activity, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources together with the 3Rs Foundation, brought together members of the institution's headquarters and delegations to promote the proper management of waste, in order to protect marine biodiversity in the country.
According to the 2018 report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), every year, between five and thirteen million tons of garbage end up in the oceans around the world; from microplastics to macro plastics such as: bags, bottles, tires, cigarette filters, balloons, caps, covers, among others.
As established in Article Seven of Law No. 225-20 on Comprehensive Management and Processing of Solid Waste, “the State has the duty to guarantee and promote the right of the people who live in the Dominican Republic to participate actively, consciously, knowledgeably, and in an organized manner in decision-making and actions aimed at protecting the environment.” Article 9 of the same law refers to the importance of raising awareness regarding the impact of waste management on quality of life, the care of the planet, and the establishment of good habits.
Onesvie, committed to promoting social responsibility actions, has previously carried out similar activities in the Zambrana section of the Sánchez Ramírez province and in Villa Altagracia, San Cristóbal province.
The coastal cleanup day took place on Friday, October 27, 2023.
