SANTO DOMINGO. – The Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (Mivhed) , engineer Carlos Bonilla, called on engineering students to assume a leading role in the transformation of the construction sector in the Dominican Republic, by getting involved in creating spaces to expedite the processes of issuing construction permits
During the opening of the seminar “New Trends in the Construction Industry in the Dominican Republic”, held at the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec) , the official highlighted the transformations that are taking place in this sector, from the creation of the agency he directs to the advances in the regulatory framework and the implementation of the Single Window for Construction (VUC).
Bonilla, a civil engineer and graduate of Intec, emphasized that Mivhed is focused on promoting clear standards, more agile processes, safer, more resilient, and sustainable buildings
“I want to emphasize that these initiatives benefit not only construction professionals, but Dominicans in general. Meetings like today's are being held at other universities because we believe that education and continuous improvement are pillars of progress and innovation in our sector,” said engineer Bonilla to the academic authorities, industry professionals, and engineering students in attendance.
Margarita Rodríguez, from the Engineering program at Intec expressed her gratitude, saying, “First of all, thank you for such a well-developed program. It might seem that in these times of so much artificial intelligence, but I think this is where knowledge begins to acquire value. It's about connecting with students who are trying to understand how to do their professional work, with professionals who are already doing it and regulating the system. I think that's excellent because artificial intelligence doesn't offer that.”
The workshop was led by the Vice Minister of Standards, Regulations and Procedures, engineer Francisco Solimán , and the Director of Processing, Valuation and Licenses, Yira Rodríguez.
The seminar covered key topics such as current technical regulations, the guide to good practices for the presentation of plans, and progress towards a Dominican Construction Code aligned with international standards.
The seminar is part of a series of meetings that Mived is holding at different universities in the country, as part of its commitment to the continuous training of professionals in the sector and the improvement of the processes of issuing permits and licenses.
