SANTO DOMINGO - The combined forces of the National District City Hall (ADN), the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), and the Dominican Municipal League (LMD) will be responsible for implementing the investment plan announced yesterday by President Luis Abinader in the National District, which involves a budget of more than one billion pesos in various parts of the capital.

The project is expected to cover 167,327 square meters of sidewalks and 75,267 linear meters of curbs.

“This is the most extraordinary project for the renovation of the capital's neighborhoods, which includes the repair and construction of sidewalks, curbs and storm drains and the paving of the main streets and avenues,” declared Deligne Ascención, Minister of Public Works.

In district one, the project will cover 74,242 square meters of sidewalks and 26,459 square meters of linear curbs, with an investment of RD$196,292,691. 116 streets will be improved, benefiting 40 sectors.

A total of 67,177 square meters of sidewalks and 40,011 linear meters of curbs are planned for the second district, with an investment of RD$205,488,894. 159 streets will be improved and 24 sectors will benefit.

In district three, the plan is to cover an area of 25,906 square meters of sidewalks and 8,795 linear meters of curbs, with an investment of RD$67,123,148. 55 streets will be improved and 15 sectors will benefit.

“This Saturday, the capital city wakes up to great news; we begin today with something that has all of us in the capital happy and pleased. We will be eagerly overseeing this work that we have awaited for so long. It is fundamental, and has always been the case in this administration, to provide all the necessary accessibility for a city for everyone. It is a Saturday of joy, a Saturday of blessings; 456 million pesos for sidewalks and curbs distributed among the three districts of the National District, 167,000 square meters of sidewalks—this is truly wonderful,” stated the Mayor of the District, Carolina Mejía.

The project is part of the National Sidewalk Plan announced by the president to be implemented in the country's 31 provinces and the National District.

“Because of his great capacity and willingness to listen to the people, President Luis Abinader recognized the urgent need for sidewalks and curbs for different communities throughout the country. Therefore, he transferred resources to the Dominican Municipal League to create a nationwide program that we are implementing, guaranteeing territorial and social cohesion, transparency, complementarity with the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), and the quality of the infrastructure,” stated LMD President Víctor D'Aza.

A leap to the Sunflowers

During his Saturday tour of the capital, Abinader included the Los Girasoles and Los Peralejos sectors, where he initiated the work for the storm and sanitary sanitation of the ravines of the same, with a projected allocation of almost one billion pesos.

"Today we have arrived with real solutions to address the demands that the inhabitants of these sectors near the Los Girasoles and Los Peralejos ravines have had for years, with which we are going to build no less than 3.4 kilometers, that is, this is an important work that we are doing here," said the president of the Dominicans.

Felipe Suverbí, director of the Santo Domingo Water and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD), explained that the infrastructure will impact the lives of more than 45,000 residents because it will change the quality of life in the area and curb the spread of diseases in two of the most vulnerable places in the National District.

“With these actions we seek not only to improve the quality of life of each of the community members, but also to eliminate the makeshift garbage dumps and thereby prevent the sources of disease and pollution that exist today,” Suberví stated.

The director of CAASD specified that in the Girasoles I and II ravines, 3,400 meters of the tributary will be cleaned up, covered with pipes and reinforced concrete culverts, benefiting more than 30,000 people. These sections are 1.9 and 1.8 meters long, respectively, and will be developed with an investment of 800 million pesos.

Suberví also highlighted that the Los Peralejos ravine, with a length of 1.63 meters, will be renovated, for which 179 million pesos will be spent and will change the lives of more than 15,000 residents.

The official reiterated that the cleanup of these waterways is a priority in his administration, highlighting in these two years the intervention of 40 kilometers of open-air ravines throughout Greater Santo Domingo, with an investment exceeding 7 billion pesos.

Later, he oversaw the stormwater and sanitation improvements to the Arroyo Hondo ravine in Los Ríos, a project managed by CAASD, and the plans for the construction of 50 apartments to relocate the affected families. These will be built by the Ministry of Housing and Buildings (MIVED).
