Korean company shows interest in building Cabo Rojo airport

SANTO DOMINGO.- Executives from the airport department, the Pedernales Trust and the General Directorate of Public Private Partnerships (DGAPP) recently received a visit from three representatives of the Korean company Korea Airports Corporation (KAC), interested in taking charge of the construction of the airport included in the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Tourism Development Master Plan.

KAC is a Korean public company specializing in airports and currently operates 14 air traffic terminals and facilities, trains aviation industry personnel and builds new airports.

During the visit, led by the technical deputy director of the DGAPP, all the details of the project's Master Plan were provided, especially those planned for the construction of the airport, and information was shared on the progress of the infrastructure works that are currently being carried out as part of the project.

For the construction of the airport terminal, work has already begun on the implementation of the environmental impact study, which is estimated to be completed in about three months, according to the execution schedule.

The vegetation report for the area, delivered by the assigned company, has already been received, and construction work is expected to begin in January 2023.

Recently, the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) and DGAPP signed a collaboration agreement to jointly promote, establish and develop new international air operations that facilitate trade and investment in the country.

About the airport

Following the environmental impact studies carried out, it was determined that the location for the construction of the Pedernales airport is Los Tres Charcos, where the necessary conditions exist to build it.

It is estimated that upon completion of the fourth phase of the plan's development, the international airport projected to be built in the border province will receive 963,155 international passengers, a number higher than the number of non-resident travelers who arrived in 2019 through the Cibao International Airport, which was 707,019.
