In two years, Airbnb blocked 72,500 people in Spain to reduce unauthorized parties on its properties

Since its launch in August 2020, the technology to enforce these restrictions has blocked or redirected bookings for around 375,000 people across Europe.

Airbnb's party prevention system has blocked bookings for 72,500 people in Spain in the two years since its launch. In the last 12 months, 26,500 people have been prevented from booking accommodation in Spain, including approximately 6,600 people in Madrid, according to the company's latest data update.

“While the vast majority of Airbnb hosts and guests are respectful neighbors and travelers, Airbnb is working on solutions to prevent unwanted behavior and help avoid problems before they arise. These automated measures were implemented by Airbnb two years ago in Spain to enforce the global ban on parties,” a statement from the platform said.

It states that the unauthorized party system is focused on guests under 25 years of age without a history of positive reviews who try to book in the same place where they reside.

Data from 2021

Since Airbnb launched its pilot project two years ago to prevent irresponsible behavior and reduce unauthorized parties in accommodations in some countries, 375,000 people have had their bookings blocked or redirected across Europe, according to the report measuring its impact and effectiveness.

"Since its launch in August 2020, the technology to enforce these restrictions has blocked or redirected bookings for around 375,000 people across Europe," an Airbnb statement said.

It indicates that these measures, which in certain circumstances restrict some bookings from guests under 25 years of age without a history of positive reviews, were introduced after the success of similar programs carried out in the United States and Canada, where a decrease in unauthorized parties was observed.

In Spain, the results were measured one year after its implementation and it was determined that almost 50,000 people were prevented from making a reservation (more than 10,000 people in Madrid, 4,500 in Barcelona, around 2,300 in Valencia and almost 2,000 in Malaga).

“In Spain, thousands of stays take place every night, the vast majority of which are respectful and considerate of the local community. Airbnb is committed to ensuring that communities can enjoy the positive benefits of responsible tourism, and these measures are helping to eliminate the kind of behavior that has absolutely no place on Airbnb,” stated Mónica Casañas, General Manager of Airbnb Marketing Services SL.

In addition to restricting certain reservations, in May 2021 Airbnb launched a summer safety plan that included a neighbor hotline in Spain, currently available in 27 countries worldwide.

"These actions are part of the update, in early August, on commitments to help promote the return of safe travel to Europe. Airbnb continues to deliver on these commitments, including creating tools and policies to help promote the safety of hosts, guests, and local communities," says the document posted by the platform in its newsroom.
