In 8 of the 14 stations of the monorail in Santiago, the State will have to acquire private land

The contract for its construction is scheduled to be awarded on March 3, 2022. The system will begin and end in the Cienfuegos and Pekín neighborhoods

SANTIAGO – To build eight of the 14 stations of the monorail system that the government plans to construct in Santiago, the State will have to acquire land that is currently privately owned, including homes, businesses, and vacant lots. In the remaining cases, the spaces or buildings are public property.

According to the terms of the open tender called last Tuesday for its construction, the bidder must consider the urban intervention of the entire area designated for each station.

The monorail system to be built in Santiago will have a capacity of 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with a length of 16 kilometers and 14 stations, as described in the tender document called by the Trust for the Development of the Mass Transit System of the Dominican Republic (Fitram), under the code FITRAM-LA-2021-0001.

The document does not estimate the cost of the project. Jhael Isa Tavárez, director of the Office of Urban and Interurban Mobility Project Development at the Ministry of the Presidency, reported that the monorail and another metropolitan train project in Santo Domingo will be financed with public investment, while the railway and technological components will be contracted out to French companies .

The project includes the consolidation of a high-capacity and readily available mass transit axis, with its own right-of-way, guaranteeing express access for users to the city center,” the tender specifications state.

adds that, from that axis, connections are planned with medium and high capacity bus corridors as feeder routes for the system, and with the Cable Car , which provides access to the southern part of the city, completing territorial coverage in about 58% of the urban context.

On September 29, President Luis Abinader officially broke ground on the cable car project that will connect 14 communities in Santiago via six stations. The cable car will cover a distance of 6.5 kilometers.

Stations and land

In its route, the monorail will begin and end in two of the most densely populated areas of Santiago : the Cienfuegos and Pekín neighborhoods .

The first station on this route, where a vacant lot will need to be acquired, is planned for Avenida Hispanoamericana near the corner of Avenida Sabaneta La Paloma. The second station, to be built at the corner of Avenida Hispanoamericana and Carretera de Matanzas, comprises a public space and a private lot.

For the fourth station, to be located at the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra, land would have to be purchased or an agreement reached with the university, according to the tender documents. For the fifth station, planned for the corner of Salvador Estrella Sadhalá Avenue and the Duarte Highway, commercial properties would have to be acquired.

For station 6A, at the corner of Salvador Estrella Sadhalá Avenue and Juan Pablo Duarte Avenue, the action would be an easement agreement with a private shopping center.

For station 10, planned for the corner of 27 de Febrero Avenue and Imbert Avenue, land would have to be purchased where there are houses. The same would apply to station 11, on Circunvalación Avenue, in the Santiago Free Trade Zone Consortium; to station 12, at the corner of the same avenue and Tamboril Avenue; and to the last station, at the intersection of Tamboril Avenue and Circunvalación Norte Avenue, in Cienfuegos.
