Hernando Gómez: “Every house built is an opportunity for development”

"The true value of the real estate sector is not measured in square meters, but in its ability to transform territories.".

SANTO DOMINGO Hernando Gómez PMO Manager at Cruise On Land , stated that construction is not limited to erecting physical structures, but rather represents an opportunity to transform the environment and foster sustainable development. In this regard, he emphasized that the real estate sector must align itself with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to generate a real impact on cities and countries.

Gómez participated as a speaker in the first El InmobiliarioForum: Metro Seguros, Real Estate Investment Squared, held on September 30, where he offered a comprehensive reflection on the role of the sector in the development of societies.

During her presentation, she highlighted the close relationship between real estate growth and human development. To illustrate this, she compared Australia's progress with that of Caribbean countries, noting that boosting the construction sector has been key to the progress of the most developed nations.

In that context, he mentioned that the Dominican Republic leads the region in human development, while Haiti faces significant challenges . According to Gómez, these differences are also reflected in urban planning and the execution of real estate projects.

The economist presented the case of Santo Domingo, which went from having 503,000 homes in 2000 to exceeding the 1.3 million projected for 2025. He also highlighted the growth of Punta Cana and areas like La Otra Banda, where more than 40,000 housing units have been developed in the last five years.

Gómez emphasized that this type of expansion must be supported by feasibility studies and strategic planning. He asserted that urban development cannot depend solely on the market, but requires a territorial vision that guarantees security and sustainability.

As a proposal, he outlined a strategy based on the collaboration of four key actors: government, the private sector, academia, and civil society. He asserted that only through this integration can harmonious urban growth with a positive social impact be achieved.

Finally, Gómez concluded that the true value of the real estate sector is not measured in square meters, but in its capacity to transform territories. He called for the adoption of proven methodologies, fostering cooperation among key stakeholders, and building a better Dominican Republic.
