SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader announced this Monday that the Government is still evaluating whether or not to resume air traffic between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
“They made a unilateral decision at the time, which is practically the final measure to have no air travel, and we complied to the best of our ability; now they are sending us this communication and we are studying it. I repeat, it was a unilateral request from them , so now they want to reestablish contact,” the president stated during the Press Week.
Last weekend, the National Institute of Civil Aeronautics of Venezuela (INAC) announced that they would allow the resumption of flights with the Dominican Republic .
The president noted, however, that they are evaluating the request due to the large number of Venezuelans residing in the Dominican Republic , and the still high number of Dominicans in Venezuela.
Suspension
Flights between the two nations have been suspended since July 2024 following questioning by several countries of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential elections.
The governments of Panama and the Dominican Republic, along with those of Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Peru, had then expressed their deep concern about the development of the presidential elections, and demanded a full review of the results announced by the National Electoral Council ( CNE ), which declared Maduro the winner, which the majority opposition denounced as " fraudulent ."
