SANTO DOMINGO.-The Government of the Dominican Republic reported last night that, according to the findings and conditions observed by the more than 300 rescue workers who remain active at the site of the tragic collapse of the Jet Set nightclub, it is estimated that, in the next two search and rescue phase will be concluded , giving way to the body recovery phase.
According to the report offered at 7:20 this Thursday, April 10, by rescue agencies, the number of dead has risen to 218, while those transferred to health centers remains at 155 people.
This transition does not imply the end of the work in the affected area , but rather the fulfillment of a new stage within the internationally established protocol for the management of this type of emergency, highlights a press release from the Presidency.
The statement explains that during the days that have passed, rescue teams have worked without interruption , removing debris, assisting the injured and recovering people alive.
"However, having exhausted all reasonable possibilities of finding more survivors, the operation now enters a different, but equally sensitive and crucial phase: the recovery of human remains with the due respect and dignity that each victim deserves."
The Government emphasizes that this change responds exclusively to technical criteria and the protection of lives, and does not in any way mean that the case is being closed or that attention to the tragedy is being reduced.
He adds that once the recovery phase is complete, the third stage : the investigation phase , which will be carried out by the competent authorities, and whose objective will be to clarify the causes of the collapse in strict compliance with due process.
We reiterate our commitment to transparency , respect for the victims and their families, and the institutional responsibility with which this regrettable situation has been handled from the very beginning.
