Government announces increased routes to several destinations to strengthen the country's air connectivity

SANTO DOMINGO.- Portugal, Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Italy and Madrid are the destinations to which the Dominican government announced new routes, with the aim of increasing air connectivity in the Dominican territory and offering travelers more options.

This was announced by the president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), José Ernesto Marte Piantini, who communicated the increase in routes and frequencies to different airlines that operate international flights to and from the Dominican territory.

“The country’s air connectivity is one of the government’s most important commitments,” Marte Piantini told the members of the plenary, while explaining the impact that air connectivity has in contributing to the productivity of important economic sectors of the country.

During the seventh session of this year, the president of the organization reported Orbest's request for special permission to operate a flight every Friday on the Lisbon/Samaná/Lisbon route, from June 28 to September 20, 2024, according to a press release.

Similarly, it reported Air Canada's request to operate 26 cargo-only flights on the Toronto/Mexico/Quito/Punta Cana/Toronto route from May 2 to October 24 of this year, with a frequency of one flight every Thursday, and the authorization to fly on the Ottawa/Punta Cana/Ottawa route from March 31 to April 28, with a frequency of one flight every Friday and Sunday, under the special permit modality on both routes.

The press release highlights that during the first session of this month, the plenary members reviewed the applications from Neos and Evelop Airlines to operate flights to and from the Dominican Republic under a special permit. Neos, an Italian carrier, requested authorization to fly the following routes: Verona/Rome/La Romana/Verona; Malpensa/Rome/La Romana/Rome/Malpensa; Verona/Rome/La Romana/Montego Bay/Verona; and Rome/La Romana/Rome. Evelop Airlines, a Spanish carrier, requested authorization to operate flights on the Barcelona/Punta Cana/Barcelona route from June 25 to September 10, 2024, with one flight every Tuesday.

Also, the members of the JAC were informed of Air Europa's request to operate flights, under a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines and Etihad Airways, on the Madrid/Santo Domingo/Madrid route, from March 31 to October 26, 2024, with a frequency of seven weekly flights, where Air Europa will be the effective operator and Turkish Airlines and Etihad Airways will be the market operators.

The JAC also acknowledged the request from Sunwing Airlines to operate 94 passenger flights from April 1 to May 22, 2024, to and from the Dominican Republic on routes to various Canadian cities, including Bagotville, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Fredericton, Toronto, Quebec City, and Saskatoon, among others.
