Family trips on Airbnb worldwide increased by more than 60% in 2022 compared to 2019, with over 15 million bookings across nearly 90,000 destinations in a single year. In Spain alone, family trips grew by almost 40% during the same period.
Many families booked accommodations on Airbnb because of the price and space they receive compared to many hotel rooms, according to a statement from the platform, which cites the advantages:
- More space for less money: In general, families can get Airbnb accommodation with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms for about the price of a hotel room in a large chain.
- Distribution: More than 30% of Airbnb listings have three or more bedrooms.
- More than one million accommodations have cribs for young children.
- Kitchens: Almost 90% of accommodations have a kitchen.
- Pets: More than 5 million pets were able to travel with their owners and sleep in Airbnb accommodations in 2022.
- Best in Winter: Autumn and winter were the most affordable times to book accommodation on Airbnb in 2022, with October, November and December averaging around 45 euros per person per night worldwide.
Airbnb hosts benefit from family travel
The platform argues that as the cost of living continues to rise, the popularity of family travel creates significant income opportunities for those considering becoming Airbnb hosts.
"At Airbnb, becoming a Host is now easier than ever. Last year, during our winter launch, we introduced Airbnb Start, which offers new Hosts the option to be paired for free with a Superhost for personalized guidance, host an experienced guest as their first visit, and gain access to a specially trained team of community support agents," the company says.
He adds that since November, twice as many prospective hosts have been connecting with Superhosts in their area and receiving personalized guidance in the process of becoming hosts for the first time.
"The possibility for families to find affordable accommodations on Airbnb makes cities with greater cultural attractions the preferred destinations for family trips.".
The report cites Spain as an example of this trend, noting that Spanish families chose Airbnb to find accommodation primarily in urban destinations. The most popular domestic destinations for Spanish families in 2022 were Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, and Seville, while London, Paris, Rome, and Lisbon were the preferred international destinations.
"But it's not just Spanish families who are increasingly using Airbnb; Spain is also consolidating its position as a family-friendly on Airbnb, again, in its cities. Barcelona and Madrid are among the top 15 destinations worldwide on Airbnb for family travel in 2022."
