SANTO DOMINGO.– Communities in Barahona that have faced limitations in the electricity service for years could begin to experience changes in energy stability with the construction of a new substation announced by Edesur Dominicana.
According to information released by the Presidency of the Republic, the electricity distribution company will invest RD$237.7 million in the construction of the Cruce de Cabral electrical substation, an infrastructure that will impact more than 50,000 users in different localities of the province.
The project includes an installed capacity of 30 megavolt-amperes (MVA), as well as the provision of four medium-voltage circuit outputs, with the purpose of improving service continuity and reducing technical losses in the network.
A project focused on the energy growth of the area
According to Edesur's general manager, José Luis Actis, the initiative is part of a modernization process of the electrical infrastructure in Barahona, focused on strengthening the quality of supply and responding to the growth of energy demand in the region.
The new infrastructure will be built on the Enriquillo road, in the Cabral municipality, and will operate at voltage levels of 69/12.5 kilovolts (kV).
The Presidency indicated that the project is part of the Network Expansion and Technical Electrical Loss Reduction Program in Distribution, executed with financing from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
More than 50 communities would be impacted
Among the towns that will receive service improvements are Cabral, Fundación, Peñón, Jaquimeyes, Palo Alto, Polo, El Cachón, La Guázara, Majagual, Habanero and Vicente Noble, in addition to other sectors of the province.
The area currently receives power from the Barahona, Khoury Industrial and Vicente Noble substations, so the commissioning of Cruce de Cabral seeks to relieve the load on the system and increase electrical stability, according to reports.
José Luis Actis also reported that Edesur is developing other improvement plans for the distribution networks in the area, as part of the actions aimed at strengthening the energy service and responding to needs accumulated over the years in different communities in the south of the country.
