SANTO DOMINGO. -The National District Mayor's Office (ADN) intensified cleaning efforts this Wednesday at the Fray Antonio de Montesino monument, where it had already removed around 35 tons of waste, mostly plastic, by mid-morning, as a result of Hurricane Beryl.
The information was provided by the head of the Directorate of Defense and Use of Public Spaces, Lieutenant Colonel José Aníbal Sanz, who confirmed that 130 city council workers and members of DO Sostenible with various teams are preparing to remove around 20 more tons of waste.
Sanz specified that the parking lot has already been recovered, while they are working intensively on the coast. He estimated that if the tide remains low, they could begin restoring the monument today, Wednesday.
He reported that the tons of garbage removed included plastics, rubble, organic waste, and other items.
“Since this morning, following instructions from Mayor Carolina Mejía, we have been working on the entire area of the Fray Antonio de Montesino monument and its beach, given that the phenomenon with its strong waves brought a considerable amount of waste,” explained the Director of Urban Cleaning, Ana González.
Among the equipment the city council has working in the area are nine dump trucks, a backhoe, and a leaf blower truck. In addition, members and equipment from the Fire Department are also present.
The city council announced that the affected monument will remain closed until it is fully restored.
