At the close of 2023, the most frequented connections by Dominican airlines were to/from South, Central and North America, such as Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, the United States and Costa Rica.
SANTO DOMINGO. – During its first session of 2024, the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) reviewed the request for a special permit from the national airline Sky High Aviation to fly several routes, thereby expanding the country's air connectivity.
These routes would be: Santo Domingo/Curacao/Miami/Curacao/Santo Domingo; Santo Domingo/Aruba/Miami/Aruba/Santo Domingo and Santo Domingo/Guyana/Santo Domingo.
Sky High Aviation's application consists of 184 round-trip flights: 53 flights on the Santo Domingo/Aruba/Miami/Aruba/Santo Domingo route, with a frequency of one flight every Wednesday and Saturday, from March 1 to September 1 of this year, and 53 flights on the Santo Domingo/Curacao/Miami/Curacao/Santo Domingo route, with a frequency of one flight every Thursday and Sunday, from March 1 to September 1 of this year, according to a press release from the JAC.
Similarly, the press release adds, the airline will operate 78 flights on the Santo Domingo/Guyana Inglesa/Santo Domingo route, every Monday, Thursday and Sunday, from January 10 to July 10.
"It should be noted that the operations will be carried out using Embraer 175, Embraer 190 and Boeing 737-300 aircraft," the press release highlights.
José Marte Piantini, president of the JAC, said that the Dominican territory continues in 2024 to increase its air connectivity with the increase in frequencies and new destinations to and from the country.
He highlighted the work of the teams in the sector's entities, stating that their efforts ensure that efficient flying is possible every day in the Dominican Republic.
Other destinations
The JAC also received the request for a special permit to operate 56 round-trip flights by AIR TRANSAT from January 5 to 31, 2024 on the following routes: Hamilton /Puerto Plata / Ottawa; Hamilton /Punta Cana /Quebec City; London, Ontario /Punta Cana /Ottawa; Ottawa /Punta Plata /Hamilton and Ottawa /Punta Cana /London; Quebec City / Punta Cana /Hamilton.
He also learned of the request for another special permit from the operator AIR CANADA, to operate round-trip flights every Sunday on the Montreal/La Romana/Montreal route, from January 14 to March 31 of this year. This route is authorized in the SUNWING AIRLINES Operating Permit, which shows that the route is in growing development.
Marte Piantini explained that air transport continues to consolidate its position as a fundamental factor in economic growth. “2023 was a record year for Dominican-based airlines. By the end of 2023, local airlines had transported 674,153 passengers,” the official stated.
He detailed that this is the highest figure ever recorded and added that the most frequented connections by Dominican airlines were to/from South, Central and North America, such as Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, the United States and Costa Rica, “these figures show the enormous effort that, with actions and as a team, the Government headed by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, has been making through the Civil Aviation Board to strengthen air transport.
