SANTO DOMINGO - Several non-governmental organizations and the company Tetra Pak donated three homes to three families with limited resources, built with polyaluminum sheets, a product of the recycling process of the company's containers.

The initiative aims to improve the living conditions of recyclers and promote the construction of eco-friendly housing.

For the construction of the houses, whose distribution ranges between 45 and 60 square meters, approximately, supports made with concrete blocks and wood were used and a covering of roofs and walls of polyaluminum sheets, made with up to 70% material derived from recycled Tetra Pak containers.

Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, the Latin American Recyclers Network (RED Lacre) and the National Recyclers Movement of the Dominican Republic (MNRRD) also participated in the housing construction.

The selection process for the three beneficiary families, who live in the provinces of Azua and San Juan, was carried out by a team that evaluated the candidates' profiles. One of the essential requirements to be a beneficiary of the project was having proof of land ownership, in addition to being a professional recycler and working in solid waste management in their residential area.

“With this initiative, we want to recognize the work of three families whose livelihood is recycling. We aim not only to highlight their work but also to improve their quality of life. Having a decent home is undoubtedly essential for the life of any human being,” stated Guillermo Pugliese, Director of Sustainability for Tetra Pak in Central America and the Caribbean.

Among the benefits of building with these technologies, the Deposit, Return and Refund System (DRRS) stands out. In addition, these houses have thermal advantages, since they concentrate less heat transfer, which represents lower energy consumption and offers greater comfort for families, assured Betsaida Santana, Programs Manager of Habitat Dominicana.

This first pilot project aims to be the start of an initiative that seeks, first and foremost, to dignify and recognize the work of informal waste pickers, as well as to promote the collection and recycling of recyclable materials
